Jiří Navrátil působí jako docent na katedře sociologie FSS MU, kde se věnuje politické sociologii, formální analýze sociálních sítí a metodologii sociálně-vědního výzkumu. Mezi jeho odborné zájmy patří zejména kolektivní jednání a politický protest (jeho aktéři, vývoj, struktura a determinanty) ekonomický konflikt v post-socialistickém kontextu (srovnání s dalšími zeměmi, role odborů), problematika mezi-organizační koordinace (tvorba koalic a její determinanty) nebo politika paměti (zejména anti-komunismus). Tato témata řeší jak ve své výuce, tak i v rámci národních nebo mezinárodních výzkumných projektů a publikací.
