The Department of Sociology, Masaryk University funds new students to undertake independent PhD research in any research area of Sociology in which it can offer supervision.

An independent PhD research focuses on a particular sociological theme not covered by currently available research projects of the Department. However, the dissertation project and the dissertation research are developed in consultation with a supervisor from the Department. The following research areas can characterise the current research profile of the Department of sociology: (i) Population Studies, Family and Ageing; (ii) Cultural Sociology, Inequality and Migration; (iii) Gender Studies, Expert Knowledge and Health; (iv) Social Stratification and Education; (v) Social Anthropology and Care. There are 2 PhD Scholarships available to begin independent PhD research in February 2023. The funding covers a stipend from the Department (est 171000 CZK for 2023) extra to the stipend provided by the state (est 144000 CZK for 2023) for up to four years. Stipends are not taxed; hence the student's nett income will be est. 311000 CZK (for 2023). Full-time employment during the scholarship period is ruled out. Students enrolled in the Sociology study programme taught in English are obliged to pay a tuition fee of 3000 EUR for one academic year. There is a possibility of financial aid for various categories of students.
