Department of Sociology FSS MUNI
The Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University builds on the legacy of one of the oldest sociology departments in Europe, originally founded in 1921 by Inocenc Arnošt Bláha, a pioneer of Czech sociology and a student of Émile Durkheim. Although its development was interrupted during the communist period, the department has re-established itself as one of the leading centres of sociological research and teaching in the Czech Republic, with strong international collaborations and a vibrant academic community.
Our research explores contemporary social challenges from a broad range of perspectives. We investigate social inequalities, family and demographic change, ageing, migration, gender, culture, health, science and technology, environmental change, and many other topics shaping contemporary societies. Research and teaching are closely connected, allowing students to engage with current projects and benefit from an active research environment throughout their studies.
The department offers Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programmes in Sociology and Social Anthropology, including internationally oriented programmes taught in English. Our academic staff participate in major international research infrastructures and collaborative projects, contributing to debates that extend well beyond the Czech Republic.
