Between revolution and crisis: Emergence, evolution and re-structuring of economic protest in post-socialist context
Between revolution and crisis: Emergence, evolution and re-structuring of economic protest in
post-socialist context analyses structure and evolution of Czech and Slovak economic protest between 1990 and 2022: its general patterns, key actors, class structure, and politicization in relation to the transformation of economic, institutional and political context.
What are the project's main goals?
What is the pattern of economic collective mobilization in post-socialist countries? The primary goal of this project is to collect and analyze data on economic collective action and protest in the Czech Republic and Slovakia between the fall of Communism and recent economic downturns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine (1990-2022). In this project, we generally draw on Polanyian logic: following gradual establishment of capitalist economy we focus on the evolution of economic collective action field accompanying this process.
The tools of protest event and social network analysis (SNA) will be employed in order to collect and analyze data. We expect that the results of project will contribute to the change of the academic debate on economic conflict and social movements in the post-socialist countries by putting emphasis on relational aspects of collective action and by showing how this action evolved in new economic and political regimes.
