Kateřina Nedbálková began her academic career with a dissertation on women's prison subcultures. She published the results of this research in her book Bound by Pleasure. In 2010, she habilitated her thesis on lesbian motherhood in late modern society, which was published in book form under the title Mothers of Courage. She joined the Department in 2004 and was Head of the Gender Studies programme from 2010-2015. Her teaching focuses primarily on qualitative methodology, especially ethnography, as well as the sociology of gender, sexuality, family, intimacy, deviance and punishment. She is actively involved in research and teaching activities in the Czech Republic and abroad. Her research has long been focused on issues of social inequalities, class, gender, intimate relationships and family structures. In addition to prison issues, she has also worked on lesbian parenting and the memory and work experiences of Roma workers. At Masaryk University, she is also involved in academic bodies and initiatives focused on equal opportunities.
